CUSTOMER FEEDBACK

Trusted by Hybrid & EV Owners Nationwide

“Second Prius battery replacement, first Prius lasted a full 439,000 miles in the original and the replacement, second Prius original battery replaced at 224,000 miles and expecting at least another 200K on this one. Both replacements are Greentec, make them your first call, they are very nice, batteries are great and you save a ton vs. the manufacturer.”

“Had a great experience with Gus, who helped me replace my Prius battery in a professional and efficient way. He handled the work quickly and answered all my questions with patience and kindness, and did a detailed diagnostic before replacing the battery. I called many shops in town to compare, and Greentec is definitely the best out of all of them. I highly recommend this place if you have any EV or hybrid car problems.”

WHICH PRIUS V BATTERY FITS YOUR CAR

Which Toyota Prius V Years Does This Battery Fit?

One battery covers every Toyota Prius V sold in the United States:

  1. 2012 Toyota Prius V — first model year
  2. 2013 Toyota Prius V
  3. 2014 Toyota Prius V
  4. 2015 Toyota Prius V
  5. 2016 Toyota Prius V
  6. 2017 Toyota Prius V — final model year

Toyota sold the Prius V in the US for six model years and discontinued it after 2017, when the RAV4 Hybrid absorbed its sales. There is no 2018 or later Prius V, and no 2011 or earlier the wagon arrived in North America for 2012.

Do All Prius V Model Years Use the Same Battery?

Yes. Unlike the standard Prius, which changed packs between generations, the Prius V used the same nickel-metal hydride battery across its entire US run. A 2012 and a 2017 Prius V take the same replacement pack, and our pricing is identical for both.

That makes fitment simple but it also means a 2012 Prius V is now on a thirteen-year-old battery, which is squarely in replacement territory.

Is the Prius V Battery the Same as a Regular Prius Battery?

The Prius V shares its hybrid system and pack architecture with the third-generation Prius (2010–2015), so the two are closely related  but confirm fitment before ordering rather than assuming. If you drive a standard Prius, a Prius C, or a Prius Prime, those are listed on their own pages.

Is the Hybrid Battery the Same as My Prius V’s 12V Battery?

No. Your Prius V has two batteries:

  1. The 12V battery — a small conventional battery that wakes the car’s electronics. If the car is completely dead and won’t power up, this is usually the culprit, and it costs a couple hundred dollars.
  2. The hybrid battery — a high-voltage nickel-metal hydride pack under the rear seat. This is the one on this page.

A dead 12V battery leaves the car unresponsive. A failing hybrid battery leaves the car drivable but slow, with poor fuel economy and a warning light.

Where Is the Hybrid Battery Located in a Prius V?

Beneath the rear seat, in a sealed enclosure. It is air-cooled by a fan drawing cabin air through an intake vent which on a wagon matters more than most people realise, because the Prius V’s whole appeal is carrying things.

SIGNS YOUR PRIUS V BATTERY NEEDS REPLACEMENT

What Are the Signs a Prius V Hybrid Battery Is Failing?

The Prius V gives clear warning. These are the six signs, roughly in the order they appear:

  1. Fuel economy drops sharply — a healthy Prius V returns around 40 to 42 mpg combined, and a failing pack can pull it into the high 20s
  2. The charge gauge swings rapidly between full and empty instead of holding mid-range
  3. The gas engine runs constantly, including at stops where it previously shut off
  4. EV mode stops engaging or drops out almost immediately
  5. Acceleration weakens, most obvious merging or climbing with the car loaded
  6. A Check Hybrid System message or the red triangle warning light appears

Fuel economy is the earliest and most reliable signal. If your Prius V’s mileage fell and nothing else explains it, get the pack tested.

What Is the P0A80 Code on a Toyota Prius V?

P0A80 means “Replace Hybrid Battery Pack.” The battery ECU sets it when it detects modules operating outside acceptable voltage range. Unlike a sensor fault, P0A80 will not clear on its own and confirms the pack itself rather than a peripheral component.

What Does the Red Triangle Warning Light Mean on a Prius V?

It indicates a fault the hybrid system considers serious. On a car of this age the battery is the most common cause, though the same light can come from the inverter, the cooling system, or a sensor. The car may enter reduced-power mode or refuse to start.

Can You Drive a Prius V With a Bad Hybrid Battery?

Short distances, yes  but not for long. A failing pack forces the engine and inverter to compensate, and inverter repair costs considerably more than a battery. Once the red triangle is lit, the car can refuse to start without warning.

Why Does a Proper Diagnostic Matter Before You Buy a Battery?

Because a hybrid warning does not automatically mean a dead pack. The same symptoms can come from a weak 12V battery, a blocked or seized cooling fan, or a temperature sensor — and each of those costs a fraction of a replacement.

Before we install anything, we run a free diagnostic to make sure the battery is really the issue. We would rather tell you that you do not need a battery than sell you one you do not need.

WHY PRIUS V BATTERIES FAIL

What Causes a Toyota Prius V Battery to Fail?

The dominant cause is heat from a blocked cooling vent  and the Prius V is more exposed to this than most hybrids.

The pack breathes through an intake near the rear seat. The Prius V is a wagon, bought specifically by people who need to carry things: strollers, dogs, gear, groceries, camping equipment. All of that ends up near the vent, and pet hair and dust build up in it over a decade.

A blocked intake means the pack runs hot, and heat degrades modules faster than mileage ever will. It will kill a brand-new pack just as quickly, which is why every Greentec installation includes cleaning the fan and duct.

If you regularly load your Prius V or fold the rear seats down for cargo, keep the vent area clear. It is the cheapest thing you can do for your battery.

Does Climate Affect Prius V Battery Life?

Significantly. Sustained heat is the enemy of NiMH cells. Prius V packs in Arizona, Texas, Nevada and Florida generally show more capacity loss at the same mileage than identical cars in temperate regions. Cold reduces available power temporarily but causes no lasting harm.

Does Letting the Car Sit Damage the Battery?

Yes. Modules self-discharge at slightly different rates, and a car parked for months lets them drift out of balance. A Prius V used as a second or occasional vehicle often ages its pack faster than a higher-mileage daily driver.

YOUR OPTIONS

Remanufactured vs. New Cells: Which Should You Choose?

The difference is what gets replaced inside the pack.

  1. Remanufactured — $999, 12 months. The pack is opened, every module is load-tested individually, and any module outside tolerance is replaced with a tested unit before rebalancing.
  2. New cells — $2,099, 48 months. Every cell is replaced regardless of condition.

The $1,100 difference buys four times the warranty, from 12 months to 48 and both are unlimited mileage. If you plan to keep the Prius V beyond a couple of years, new cells are usually the better value per year of coverage. If you are preparing to sell, $999 restores full function at the lowest cost we offer on any vehicle.

How Long Will a Replacement Prius V Battery Last?

Our packs are built to outlast their warranty. In practice we typically see at least double the warranty period, and frequently a good deal more.

That is what we observe across the packs we build, not a guarantee — batteries are wear items and conditions vary. The warranty is the floor we stand behind, not our estimate of the pack’s life.

Can You Just Replace the Bad Cell or Module?

You can, and it is a false economy. Here is why.

Every cell in your Prius V pack has lived the same life — the same heat, the same cycles, the same decade or more. When one fails, the others are rarely far behind. Replace the single worst cell and the pack works again, briefly. A couple of months later the next-weakest cell fails, and you are back where you started.

That becomes an expensive game of whack-a-mole. Each round costs another diagnosis, another teardown, more labor and more downtime, and none of it addresses the root problem: the pack as a whole has reached the end of its service life.

This is why we test and replace at the module level across the entire pack. It is also why we can offer 12 to 48 months of warranty  you cannot warranty a pack you have only partially repaired.

Is It Worth Replacing a Prius V Hybrid Battery?

For most owners, clearly yes  and the case is unusually strong here. At $999 for a remanufactured pack, the repair costs a fraction of what a comparable running Prius V sells for, and these cars comfortably pass 250,000 miles once the battery is sorted.

There is also no direct replacement for a Prius V. Toyota discontinued the wagon after 2017 and never replaced it, so owners who need that cargo space in a hybrid have nowhere obvious to move. Keeping the car running is usually the better outcome.

Will a New Battery Restore My Prius V’s Fuel Economy?

Yes, largely. The mileage loss comes from the engine compensating for a pack that can no longer assist or hold charge. Restore the pack and economy returns close to original — around 40 to 42 mpg combined  along with EV mode and normal acceleration.

COST AND VALUE

How Much Does a Toyota Dealer Charge for a Prius V Battery?

Dealership quotes run substantially higher  the pack is billed at parts-counter pricing and labor is charged separately by the hour on top. Greentec Auto pricing is 30% to 50% below dealership rates, quoted as one number that includes installation.

Does the Price Change Depending on My Model Year?

No. A 2015 Prius V battery replacement costs exactly the same as a 2012 or a 2017. Every US Prius V uses the same pack, so we keep pricing consistent across all six model years.

Do You Offer Financing?

Yes. Financing is available on every pack, so a replacement can be spread rather than paid up front.

INSTALLATION

Do You Offer Mobile Installation for the Prius V?

Yes. Our mobile installation team brings everything to you — no towing, no waiting room. A technician comes to your driveway or workplace, tests your hybrid system, installs the new pack, and takes the old one away for recycling.

What Is Included in the Installation?

  1. Free diagnostic to confirm the battery is genuinely the fault
  2. Professional installation by hybrid-certified technicians
  3. Cooling fan and vent cleaning — never skipped
  4. ECU reset and calibration so the car learns the new pack
  5. Full system testing across the complete charge and discharge range
  6. Free recycling of your old battery

Every battery is tested multiple times before it reaches your car. We don’t skip steps and we don’t rush the process.

Can I Replace a Prius V Hybrid Battery Myself?

No. The pack carries high voltage sufficient to be fatal. Correct isolation, torque specification and post-installation calibration all require training and equipment. Installation is included in every price we quote.

Where Do You Service the Prius V?

Greentec Auto has service locations across the United States, plus mobile installation in most areas. If you’re in Canada, Greentec Auto Canada handles local service.

RECYCLING

What Happens to My Old Prius V Battery?

Every module in your returned pack is tested individually. Modules still meeting spec go into remanufactured packs. Those that fall short move to Greentec Energy for second-life use in home energy storage and EV conversions. Only what cannot be reused at all is processed for material recovery.

Recycling is included with every replacement at no charge.

Get Your Prius V Running Right Again

A failing hybrid battery does not mean the end of the car —and on a Prius V that matters more than usual, because Toyota never replaced it. If you need a hybrid wagon, this is still the car.

Start with the free diagnostic. A blocked cooling vent, a failed fan, or a weak 12V battery can produce the same symptoms and cost a fraction to fix.

Know Your Hybrid’s Battery Health Without Breaking the Bank

If you notice warning lights on your dashboard, don’t rush to the dealership for an expensive diagnostic report. Many local auto parts stores can scan your vehicle and provide error codes for free just ask them to run a quick scan with a diagnostic tool.

Above, we’ve listed some of the most common hybrid error codes. Keep in mind that the check engine light must be onfor major issues to be detected. If your vehicle is experiencing hybrid battery failure, dealerships often charge thousands of dollars for a replacement typically with a limited warranty.

At Greentec Auto, we offer a cost-effective alternative, providing high-quality hybrid battery replacements at a fraction of the price. Plus, we back our batteries with a comprehensive warranty to give you peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most Prius V batteries last between 8 and 12 years depending on how you drive and where you live. If you bought a 2012 or 2013 Prius V new, you’re likely due for a replacement now. Models from 2014-2017 are entering that replacement window too.

Dealerships usually charge $3,000 to $4,000 for any Prius V year. Greentec Auto offers remanufactured batteries that cost 30-50% less, whether it’s a 2015 or any other model year.

Yes. We stock replacement batteries for every Prius V from 2012 through 2017. All years are in stock and ready to ship or install.

We don’t recommend it. Hybrid batteries carry high voltage and need special tools and training to install safely. Our mobile service takes care of everything for you, no matter what year your Prius V is.

Absolutely. Every Prius V battery — from 2012 to 2017 models — comes with a Greentec Auto Warranty ranging from 12 to 48 months with unlimited mileage, depending on the option you choose.
