Dakota was very friendly and helpful. I brought my 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid for the diagnostics and it turned out the hybrid battery was not the problem. We just had a new hybrid battery installed in our 2009 ford escape hybrid. What a difference! The original battery was on its last legs at 200,000 miles but it is now peppy and ready for a lot more miles. Mike Wojo installed it in 20 minutes, amazingly quick. We also had great contact with Greentecs office staff to set this up for the replacement to occur in our garage.

Hey guys. So today we’re talking about Ford Escape hybrid battery replacement. We’re going to be going over cost, cells, lifespan, all the information you need to know. We heard that these battery costs can be super expensive. You’re a bit hesitant to doing so. But today, we’re going to break that all down and give you all [music] the information you need to know. So, let’s just get right into it. So, Ford Escape made two different types of of batteries. Okay? So, one was from 2005 to 2009 and the second model was from 2010 to 2013. Okay? So, this is what the battery pack looks like itself. They’re nickel metal hydrate cells all along through the pack. Well, actually modules. And uh there’s going to be 30 inside of the pack itself. You have the fan right here, which basically sucks in air, pushes it into the battery to keep it cool. And uh yeah, so this is actually what the cells look like inside of the battery, right? So this is a remanufactured cell. And uh we found that this [music] wasn’t the best solution. Okay, so these batteries that Ford made weren’t able to hold the charge and there were a few other things that they weren’t able to do very well. So we kind of came up with our own solution. We’ve been doing it for I think over a year now and we’ve had very very little problems. So what what the big difference is [music] is anytime you buy a remanufactured battery from Ford, right? Whether it’s a 2005 to 2009 model or 2010 [music] and 2013, you’re getting a cell, right, that is over 10 years old, potentially 15 [music] years old basically. So remanufactured batteries can still last a long time. For example, for a Prius, they can last, you know, up to 8 to 10 years. [music] But these cells aren’t very good. And if you’re buying any one of these remanufactured cells from anybody, [music] they’re going to be very, very old. So, let’s get down to lifespan, right? So, Ford Escape hybrid batteries tend to last anywhere from 8 to 10 years on average, depending on the climate and where you live. Like, if you live somewhere hot like California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, the batteries degrade and they and they die in heat. [music] So, that could be a big factor for your battery’s lifespan. Okay. A couple other things you should know about the battery replacement [music] itself is it’s actually very very simple. So, it’s kind of in the trunk of your Ford Escape, [music] right? So, if you pop up in the trunk and you’re putting stuff in the trunk, right below there is where this battery lies for both of the models, right? [music] So, we have two different options. We have an 18-month warranty and then we also have a 36-month warranty. It’s pretty simple. If your battery dies, you don’t have to pay a shop for a diagnostic, $150, $200, whatever the dealership charges. We have a free diagnostic service. Ford discontinued the Ford Escape Hybrid after 2012. The 2013 Escape was a completely redesigned vehicle with no hybrid option, so there is no 2013 Ford Escape hybrid battery.

Look for Hybrid badging on the tailgate and front fenders, an energy-flow display in the instrument cluster or center screen, and a 2.3L four-cylinder rather than the V6. The Ford Escape Hybrid also shuts its engine off at stoplights — a conventional Ford Escape of this era does not.
No. Your Ford Escape Hybrid has two separate batteries:
If the dash is dead or the vehicle won’t wake up, that is usually the 12V battery. If your Ford Escape Hybrid drives but has lost power and fuel economy, that is the hybrid pack.
At the rear of the vehicle, beneath and behind the cargo area, in a sealed enclosure. The Ford Escape hybrid battery is air-cooled by a fan drawing cabin air through a vent — which is why what you carry in the back of a Ford Escape Hybrid directly affects how long the battery lasts.
ABOUT THE FORD ESCAPE HYBRID SYSTEM
A nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) pack running at roughly 330 volts. NiMH is a durable chemistry that degrades gradually rather than failing suddenly, which is why a weakening Ford Escape hybrid battery announces itself through lost fuel economy long before the vehicle stops working.
Yes, in part. Ford developed the Ford Escape Hybrid independently but licensed a number of hybrid patents from Toyota to bring it to market. The result is a full hybrid — unlike a mild hybrid, the Ford Escape Hybrid can drive on electric power alone at low speeds, which is why losing EV-only range is one of the clearest signs the pack is failing.
Unusually reliable, and there is a well-known proof point: New York City and San Francisco both ran large Ford Escape Hybrid taxi fleets, and many of those vehicles passed 300,000 miles on their original hybrid battery packs in the hardest duty cycle a hybrid can face.
That matters if you are deciding whether to keep your Ford Escape Hybrid. These are not fragile vehicles. A failing battery at this age is the pack reaching the end of a long life, not a sign the vehicle is worn out.
Your Ford Escape Hybrid gives clear warning before the pack fails outright. These are the six signs, in roughly the order they appear:
Fuel economy and lost EV mode almost always show up months before a warning light. If your Ford Escape Hybrid’s mileage dropped and nothing else explains it, get the pack tested.
It indicates a fault somewhere in the high-voltage system. On a Ford Escape Hybrid of this age that is most often the battery pack, but it can also be the battery cooling fan, a temperature sensor, or the battery control module. The light tells you there is a problem — not which component.
P0A80 means “Replace Hybrid Battery Pack.” It is set when the vehicle’s battery monitoring system detects modules operating outside acceptable voltage range. Unlike a sensor fault, P0A80 will not clear on its own and points at the Ford Escape hybrid battery itself rather than a peripheral component.
For short distances, usually yes — but you should not keep doing it. A failing Ford Escape hybrid battery forces the gas engine and the inverter to compensate, and inverter repair costs considerably more than a battery. Once the vehicle limits power or refuses to enter EV mode, have it diagnosed before driving further.
Because a hybrid warning light does not automatically mean a dead pack. On a vehicle approaching two decades old, the same symptoms can come from a failing 12V battery, a seized or blocked cooling fan, a temperature sensor, or the battery control module — and every one of those costs a fraction of a replacement pack.

The dominant cause is heat from a restricted cooling vent. The Ford Escape Hybrid cools its pack with a fan pulling cabin air through an intake at the rear of the vehicle. On an SUV that vent lives exactly where people put cargo, dogs, groceries and camping gear.
Block it and the pack runs hot, and heat degrades modules far faster than mileage does. A blocked vent will destroy a brand-new Ford Escape hybrid battery just as quickly, which is why every Greentec installation includes cleaning the fan and duct.
If you regularly load your Ford Escape Hybrid to the roof, leave a few inches clear at the vent. It is the cheapest thing you can do for your battery.
Significantly. Sustained heat is the enemy of NiMH cells, and Ford Escape Hybrids in Arizona, Texas, Nevada and Florida generally show more capacity loss at the same mileage than identical vehicles in temperate regions. Cold reduces available power temporarily but does not cause lasting damage.
Yes. A vehicle parked for months lets modules self-discharge at different rates and drift out of balance. Ford Escape Hybrids used seasonally or kept as a second vehicle often age their packs faster than daily drivers with higher mileage.
The difference is what gets replaced inside the pack.
The decision comes down to how long you plan to keep your Ford Escape Hybrid. The $800 difference doubles the warranty from 18 to 36 months. If you intend to keep the vehicle beyond two years — and most Ford Escape Hybrid owners do — the new-cell pack is usually the better value per year of coverage. If you are preparing to sell, the remanufactured pack restores full function for less.

That is what we observe across the packs we build, not a guarantee — batteries are wear items and conditions vary. The warranty is the floor we stand behind, not our estimate of the pack’s life.
Every cell in your Ford Escape hybrid battery has lived the same life — the same heat, the same cycles, the same eighteen-plus years. When one fails, the others are rarely far behind. Replace the single worst cell and the pack works again, briefly. A couple of months later the next-weakest cell fails, and you are back where you started.
That becomes an expensive game of whack-a-mole. Each round costs another diagnosis, another teardown, more labor and more downtime, and none of it addresses the root problem: the pack as a whole has reached the end of its service life.
