Hyundai has been unusually generous with Sonata Hybrid battery coverage, and a lot of owners have no idea how much they are entitled to.

This one transfers. It covers the original owner and subsequent owners alike. If you bought your used Sonata Hybrid, you did not lose it the clock simply runs from the car’s original in-service date, not from when you bought it.
Starting with the 2012 model year, Hyundai offered a Hybrid Lifetime Battery Guarantee: if the battery fails, Hyundai replaces it, and covers recycling of the old pack, at no charge to the original owner. It was the first guarantee of its kind in the industry. The program ended with the 2020 model year.

Which Sonata Hybrid Do You Have?
The Sonata Hybrid has run through three generations plus a plug-in, and the battery you need depends on which one is in your driveway.

If there is a charge port on the front fender, you have a Plug-In. The Plug-In carries a far larger battery so it can drive around 27 miles on electricity alone which the standard Hybrid never does and that is why its pack costs $5,999 rather than $3,499.
When the Sonata Hybrid arrived for 2011, most hybrids on the road Toyota’s and Honda’s were still running nickel-metal hydride packs. Hyundai went straight to lithium polymer, developed with LG Chem using a manganese spinel chemistry chosen for durability and thermal stability. It is a big part of why the Sonata Hybrid drives more like a conventional sedan than a Prius does. It is also why a Sonata pack costs more than a comparable Toyota pack: lithium is simply more expensive to build.
It depends on the year — Hyundai moved it in 2020.
That 2020 relocation is why owners of newer Sonatas who follow an older guide go looking in the trunk and find nothing. On a 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 or 2025 Sonata Hybrid, the rear seat cushion has to come out to reach the pack.
Either way, this is high-voltage equipment carrying lethal DC voltage. Service requires the high-voltage disconnect and proper isolation procedure. It is not a driveway job on any Sonata.

About the 2020 solar roof: the available Solar Roof on 2020-and-newer Sonata Hybrids feeds the hybrid battery directly, and Hyundai estimates it can add roughly 700 electric-running miles a year. It is a genuine range contributor, not a gimmick — and it means a 2020+ car with a healthy pack is doing more work with it than any earlier Sonata.
On a Plug-In, the electric-range number after a full charge is the single most sensitive early indicator you can watch it every morning.
A hybrid warning light does not automatically mean a failed pack. We regularly diagnose Sonatas whose owners arrived expecting a bill in the thousands and paid a fraction of it.

How Long Does a Sonata Hybrid Battery Last?
Most Sonata Hybrid packs last 8 to 12 years, or roughly 100,000 to 150,000 miles close to where Hyundai set the standard warranty, which is not a coincidence.
What decides where a specific car lands:
There is a cheaper offer on the market, usually sold as “Sonata hybrid battery repair”: find the single weak module, swap it, close the pack, send you home.
Every module in a Sonata pack has been through the same years, the same heat and the same charge cycles. When one crosses the failure threshold, the rest are close behind. A single fresh module does not lift an aging pack the aging modules drag it down and the pack falls out of balance again within weeks or months.
We have had clients arrive after doing this three, four and five times elsewhere. Each round is a few hundred dollars and a short stretch of normal driving. Added up, they spent more than a full replacement and still owned an aging pack.
It follows the car to resale, too. “One module is new and the rest are twelve years old” is what you have to tell a buyer.
What we do instead: the pack is rebuilt from cells tested individually for capacity and internal resistance, rested and re-measured, then balanced so the finished battery behaves as one unit. Cells that do not meet standard are not reused — they go to Greentec Recycling.

New cells are the better battery. Longer service life, double the warranty term, and a starting point that has not already spent a decade in a car. On a lithium pack in a hot state, that matters more than it would on an older nickel pack, because heat is doing the damage and you want the most life in the cells you can get.
Remanufactured is a legitimate choice built to the same process. For a Sonata you plan to drive two or three more years, it is often the smarter buy.
Mobile installation is available for 2011–2015 Sonata Hybrid packs in most of our service areas. A technician comes to your home, your workplace, or a shop of your choosing and does the replacement on site.
Shop installation is required for the 2016–2019 and 2020–2023 Sonata Hybrid and the Sonata Plug-In Hybrid. These need equipment that does not travel contact us to arrange it.

First, make sure you are not covered see the warranty section. On a 2016–2023 car especially, there is a real chance Hyundai pays.
If you are paying: a running Sonata Hybrid is worth considerably more than one with a dead pack, and the rest of the car is generally sound at the age these batteries fail. Compare the replacement cost against what a comparable used car actually costs today, not against what your Sonata would fetch with a dead pack and factor in that you know this car’s history and you do not know the next one’s.
On a Plug-In, do the arithmetic carefully. A $5,999 pack is a serious number against the car’s market value. It can still be the right call, and we will talk you through it honestly rather than just quoting you.
Replacement clearly does not make sense with major accident damage, transmission failure alongside the battery, or severe rust.
It goes to Greentec Recycling. Every Sonata Hybrid generation uses lithium-based cells, so the pack is processed to recover lithium and cobalt that return to the supply chain for new battery production rather than being mined again. Nothing goes to the landfill.
