I can’t recommend Greentech Auto highly enough. When I desperately needed a new hybrid battery during a difficult time, they were incredibly understanding and supportive. They listened carefully to my situation, treated me with genuine kindness and patience, and worked hard to find a solution that helped ease the burden. Despite some complications with my case, they stayed committed until everything was resolved and I was fully taken care of. Their empathy and customer focus made a stressful situation so much better. Truly exceptional service.

I was very pleased with the way everything was handled. I would recommend Greentech to anyone who has a hybrid. I had faced a lot of issues in the past with this battery. Cost is a little higher, but now I will not be so worried.

General Motors recalled the Chevy Bolt over a battery fire risk, and if your vehicle still has open recall coverage, GM does that work at no cost to you and you should take it rather than paying us or anybody else.
Here is the history, because it matters for which group your car falls into:
| Where | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| GM’s recall lookup, at the Chevrolet owner center or experience.gm.com | Whether GM has an open campaign on your specific vehicle |
| The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration VIN lookup at nhtsa.gov | The federal record for your vehicle, independent of the manufacturer |
| 1-833-EVCHEVY, or a Chevrolet EV certified dealer | A person who can read your VIN record and book the work |
Recalls attach to individual vehicles, not to model names. Two 2019 Bolts on the same street can be in different positions. The only way to know yours is to run your own number.
Go to the dealer. The work is free to you. A pack installed under the recall carries its own 8 year warranty from the date of installation, which is coverage you cannot buy from an aftermarket supplier at any price. Owners who went through the recall replacement received a new pack and some reported better range afterwards than the car had when new.
We would rather lose the sale than take money from somebody entitled to a free pack from GM. If you call us and your VIN shows open coverage, that is what we will tell you.
If your vehicle is affected and the remedy has not been completed, GM’s own interim steps are:
Follow GM’s guidance for your vehicle, not a summary of it. Confirm the current instructions against your VIN record.
Having said all of that, there is a real set of Bolt owners who need a Chevy Bolt battery replacement they have to pay for, and we build for them. You are in that group if:
Your VIN shows no open recall coverage and the pack has failed or degraded. Either the recall was completed years ago and the replacement pack has now aged out, or your vehicle was never in the affected range.
Your vehicle is a 2023 model year. The battery fire recall covered Bolt EV through 2022 and Bolt EUV in 2022. A 2023 Bolt EV or Bolt EUV is outside that campaign, so a 2023 owner with a failing pack is in a straightforward paid replacement position. First generation production ended on 20 December 2023.
You are outside GM’s warranty and outside any open campaign. The factory coverage has lapsed on age or mileage and there is no open campaign attached to your VIN.
The pack is damaged rather than defective. Collision damage, water intrusion and physical damage are not recall or warranty matters in any case.
Your dealer has quoted a figure you want a second option against. A dealer pack on a Bolt runs well into five figures, and Chevy Bolt battery replacement cost is the single thing owners contact us about most. That gap is where we operate.
If none of those describe you, stop reading and call the dealer. If one of them does, the rest of this page is for you.
| Your vehicle | Years | Installation | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chevy Bolt EV | 2017 to 2019 | Shop installation only | $10,000 |
| Chevy Bolt EV | 2020 to 2021 | Shop installation only | $10,000 |
| Chevy Bolt EUV | 2022 to 2023 | Shop installation only | $10,000 |
| Chevy Bolt EV | 2023 | Shop installation only | $10,000 |
Every Chevy Bolt replacement battery we supply comes with a warranty, and the term depends on whether you choose new cells or remanufactured. Ask for it in writing with your quote, on most qualifying batteries.
A Chevy Bolt battery replacement is one of the more expensive jobs we do, and the reason is simply how much energy is in the pack. A Bolt carries 60 to 66 kWh. A Prius carries about 1.3 kWh. That is roughly fifty times the energy, built from 288 lithium cells rather than 28 nickel metal hydride modules, and the price reflects the raw cell cost rather than a markup on labor.
Set against a dealer quote for a new GM pack, which runs well into five figures, Chevy Bolt battery replacement cost through an aftermarket builder usually still wins by a wide margin. Set against the value of a nine year old Bolt, it sometimes does not, and we will say so when that is the honest answer.
Prices on this page are accurate as of the posting date and are subject to change. Final pricing depends on your exact model year, trim and VIN, on which build you select, and on installation. Check current pricing at greentecauto.com or request a quote for your specific vehicle.
Which Bolt Do You Have?
The Chevrolet Bolt went through three battery configurations and two body styles in seven model years, so the year matters more here than the badge does.
| Your vehicle | US model years | Pack capacity | EPA range when new |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bolt EV, first configuration | 2017, 2018, 2019 | 60.0 kWh | 238 miles combined |
| Bolt EV, revised chemistry | 2020 to 2023 | 66.0 kWh | 259 miles |
| Bolt EUV | 2022 to 2023 | 65.0 kWh | 247 miles combined |
GM raised the Bolt EV from 60 to 66 kWh for the 2020 model year through a change to the cell chemistry rather than by adding cells, which is why a 2020 car gained 21 miles of EPA range over a 2019 without getting any bigger.
The Bolt EUV is the taller, longer body style sold alongside the EV from the 2022 model year. Its pack is 65 kWh, close to but not the same as the contemporary EV’s 66.
Both body styles ended together. GM stopped first generation production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV on 20 December 2023.
Send us the year and the VIN and we will confirm which pack your vehicle takes in writing, along with whether you have open recall coverage, before anything is ordered.
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | Chevrolet Bolt EV and Chevrolet Bolt EUV, first generation |
| Chemistry | Lithium ion |
| Capacity | 60.0 kWh for 2017 to 2019, 66.0 kWh for 2020 to 2023 Bolt EV, 65.0 kWh for Bolt EUV |
| Cell count | 288 cells, arranged as 96 groups of three cells in parallel |
| Cell format | Flat landscape format pouch cells |
| Original cell supplier | LG, with first generation cells from the Ochang plant implicated in the recall. Bolt EUV cells were built by LG in Michigan |
| Pack location | Flat, under the floor, between the axles |
| Second generation | The 2027 Bolt moves to CATL cells, a different vehicle and a different pack |
Three things follow from that table.
The pack is in the floor, so this is not a cabin job. A Bolt pack comes out from underneath on a lift with a pack table. That is why we do Bolt work in a shop and not in a driveway, and it is a large part of why the job costs what it does.
288 cells in 96 parallel groups of three is a very different architecture from a nickel metal hydride hybrid pack. There is no module you swap to buy time. Cell level faults are managed by the battery management system, and when the pack is finished it is replaced as a pack.
The 2027 Bolt is a different car. It uses CATL cells on a different platform. Nothing on this page applies to it.
The honest answer for a Bolt is different from the answer for a hybrid, and most pages get this wrong by borrowing the hybrid framing.
A nickel metal hydride hybrid pack tends to work until it does not, and then throws a code. A lithium EV pack like the Bolt’s loses range gradually. You do not usually get a sudden failure. You get a car that used to show 238 miles at full charge and now shows 190, then 170. The pack is still working. It is holding less.
What we see across Bolt packs: usable range typically holds up well through the first several years, with gradual loss accelerating past roughly the eighth year. GM publishes no service life figure and neither will we.
The things that move the number:
Fast charging habits. A Bolt that lives on DC fast charging ages its pack faster than one charged at home on AC. The Bolt’s DC charge rate is modest by modern standards, which helps, but the pattern still holds.
Charging to 100 percent and sitting there. A lithium pack held at full charge degrades faster than one held nearer the middle. This is also, separately, what the recall guidance was about.
Heat. Phoenix and Las Vegas are harder on a Bolt pack than Seattle is. The Bolt has liquid thermal management, which helps considerably compared with an air cooled pack, but ambient heat over a decade still counts.
Depth of cycling. Running the pack from full to nearly empty repeatedly is harder on it than shallower daily cycles.
What does not meaningfully help: battery conditioning gadgets, additives, or any of the reconditioning services that work on nickel metal hydride hybrids. Those techniques do not transfer to a lithium EV pack and anybody selling you one for a Bolt is selling you nothing.
If your Bolt received a replacement pack under the recall, that pack is younger than the car and it came with an 8 year warranty running from the date of installation. A 2018 Bolt that had its pack replaced in 2023 has a 2023 pack, not a 2018 one. When you are valuing the car or planning for a replacement, the pack’s install date is the date that matters.
Signs Your Bolt Battery Needs Attention
Range at full charge has dropped noticeably. The clearest signal and the one to track. Note the guess-o-meter reading at 100 percent over several charges in similar weather and compare it to what the car used to show. Winter range loss is normal and recovers; a permanent step down does not.
A battery related message in the driver information center. On a Bolt with the diagnostic software installed, the system is actively watching the pack and will put a message up if it finds something. That message is a reason to contact a certified dealer, not a reason to order a pack from us.
Propulsion power is reduced. The car limits output when the management system is unhappy with the pack.
Charging behaves differently. Sessions ending early, the car refusing to take a full charge, or a charge rate that has fallen off without a change in conditions.
Cells out of balance on a diagnostic read. Not visible from the driver’s seat, and the reason a proper scan matters.
If your Bolt shows Battery Saver Active, that is normally the low voltage accessory system rather than the high voltage traction pack. It is a cheap part and a different diagnosis. Rule it out before you start looking at pack prices.
Run the VIN, then get a diagnostic, then talk about buying. In that order. A Bolt owner who orders a pack off a range reading has a real chance of paying five figures for something GM would have done free, or for something that turns out to be a different fault entirely.
How to Tell If a Used Bolt Has Already Had Its Battery Replaced
This is the most useful thing on this page if you are buying rather than repairing, and almost nobody publishes it.
A Bolt whose pack was replaced under the recall is a materially better car than one that was not, because the pack is years newer and carries its own 8 year warranty from installation. That difference is worth real money and it is usually not on the listing.
How to establish it:
If you are selling a Bolt that had the recall completed, put the install date in the listing. It is the single best thing you can say about the car.
On a hybrid, a salvage pack is a gamble. On a Bolt it is worse, for a specific reason: the packs most likely to be sitting in salvage are from the recall era, built with the same LG cells that caused the campaign in the first place. Unless the seller can prove the pack is a post recall replacement with an install date, you are buying the exact risk GM spent two years and 142,000 vehicles trying to remove from the road.
Do not do this one.
How a Chevy Bolt Battery Replacement Works at Greentec Auto
It is a lithium ion pack, so it goes a different route from a hybrid pack. Cells and modules are tested, and what fails goes to Greentec Recycling where a lithium ion pack is processed for its lithium and cobalt. What passes but is no longer fit for a vehicle goes to Greentec Energy for home energy storage and conversion work. None of it is landfilled.
We have been replacing hybrid and EV batteries since 2012, which is fourteen years of this. The business started in Sacramento, California and the main U.S. distribution center is now in Kansas City. On the Bolt specifically, the most valuable thing we do is often the thing that costs us the sale: checking the VIN first and telling an owner the work is free.
If you notice warning lights on your dashboard, don’t rush to the dealership for an expensive diagnostic report. Many local auto parts stores can scan your vehicle and provide error codes for free just ask them to run a quick scan with a diagnostic tool.
Above, we’ve listed some of the most common hybrid error codes. Keep in mind that the check engine light must be onfor major issues to be detected. If your vehicle is experiencing hybrid battery failure, dealerships often charge thousands of dollars for a replacement typically with a limited warranty.
At Greentec Auto, we offer a cost-effective alternative, providing high-quality hybrid battery replacements at a fraction of the price. Plus, we back our batteries with a comprehensive warranty to give you peace of mind.
Most Chevy Bolt batteries last 8 to 10 years or between 100,000 and 150,000 miles. Factors like charging habits, climate, and driving style can affect battery lifespan.
All Greentec Auto replacement batteries are backed by a comprehensive warranty. Coverage terms vary depending on whether you choose a new or remanufactured battery, giving you long-term reliability and peace of mind.
Common warning signs include reduced driving range, slower charging times, sudden drops in performance, or dashboard alerts related to the battery.
No. We only offer In Shop Installs for the Chevy Bolt.
Dealership replacement costs can reach tens of thousands of dollars. Greentec Auto offers more affordable alternatives with both new and remanufactured battery options, professional installation, and warranty coverage.
