If your Prius is a 2003 or earlier it is a first generation car and takes a different pack. A 2010 or later is third generation, also a different pack. The Prius C, Prius V and Prius Prime are separate vehicles with their own batteries.
“Gen 2” is what owners and technicians call the second-generation Toyota Prius, built from 2004 to 2009 and known internally as the XW20. It is the car that made the Prius a household name the first Prius most people picture, and by a wide margin the most numerous hybrid on the road today.

No. Your Toyota Prius has two separate batteries, and confusing them is the most common mistake owners make:
A dead 12V battery leaves the car unresponsive. A failing hybrid battery leaves the car drivable but slow, thirsty, and eventually warning-lit. If your Prius won’t wake up at all, check the 12V first.
Behind the rear seat, ahead of the trunk, in a sealed enclosure. It is air-cooled by a fan drawing cabin air through an intake vent on the passenger side a detail that matters more on this car than almost any other hybrid, for reasons below.
A 201.6-volt nickel-metal hydride pack built from 28 modules. NiMH degrades gradually rather than failing suddenly, which is why a weakening Gen 2 Prius battery announces itself through falling fuel economy months before the car sets a warning light.
A second-generation Toyota Prius battery typically lasts 10 to 15 years or 150,000 to 200,000 miles and many have gone considerably further. Taxi and rideshare fleets running these cars routinely passed 300,000 miles on original packs.
That durability is why 2004–2009 Prius owners are only now facing replacement. A pack failing at this age is one at the end of a long life, not a car that was poorly built.
Age, more than mileage. Every 2004–2009 Prius is now sixteen to twenty-two years old, and nickel-metal hydride cells degrade calendar-wise whether the car is driven or not. A garage kept 90,000-mile 2006 Prius is on the same twenty-year-old pack as a 250,000-mile one.
Six signs, in roughly the order they appear:
Fuel economy is the earliest and most reliable indicator, typically dropping two to four months before any light. If your mileage fell and nothing else explains it, get the pack tested.
It is what owners call the red triangle warning light with an exclamation point the symbol the Gen 2 Prius shows when the hybrid system detects a serious fault. It usually appears alongside a Check Hybrid System message.
On a car this age it most often means the hybrid battery, but the same light can be triggered by the inverter, the cooling system, the battery ECU or a sensor. The light tells you there is a problem, not which part. The car may enter a reduced-power limp mode or refuse to start.
P0A80 means “Replace Hybrid Battery Pack.” The battery ECU sets it when it detects modules operating outside acceptable voltage range. Unlike a sensor fault, P0A80 will not clear on its own and confirms the pack itself rather than a peripheral component.
If you have been quoted a battery on the basis of a P0A80, that quote is well founded but still worth verifying, because the code confirms module failure and not always the extent of it.
Short distances, yes but not for long. A failing pack forces the engine and inverter to compensate, and inverter replacement costs considerably more than a battery. Once the red triangle is lit, a Gen 2 Prius can refuse to start without warning, often in a parking lot rather than a driveway.
Because a hybrid warning does not automatically mean a dead pack. On a Gen 2 Prius the same symptoms can come from a weak 12V battery, a blocked or seized battery cooling fan, a temperature sensor, or the battery ECU and every one of those costs a fraction of a replacement.
We would rather tell you that you do not need a battery than sell you one you do not need. Anyone quoting you a pack over the phone, without testing the car, is guessing with your money.
The dominant cause is heat from a blocked battery cooling fan and on the second-generation Prius this is the single most documented maintenance issue on the car.
The pack breathes through an intake vent low on the passenger side, behind the rear seat. Over two decades that vent and the fan behind it fill with dust, carpet fibers, pet hair and debris. A blocked intake means the pack runs hot, and heat kills nickel-metal hydride modules faster than mileage ever will.
A clogged fan will destroy a brand-new pack just as quickly. Every Greentec installation includes cleaning the fan and duct a step that gets skipped elsewhere and is a leading reason replacement packs fail early.
Vacuum the intake grille at least once a year, and twice if you carry pets or regularly load the rear seats. Do not block the vent with cargo, a cargo liner, or anything stored against the passenger side rear panel. It takes five minutes and it is the highest-value maintenance you can do on this car.
Significantly. Sustained heat is the enemy of NiMH cells. Gen 2 Prius packs in Arizona, Texas, Nevada and Florida generally show more capacity loss at the same mileage than identical cars in temperate regions. Cold reduces available power temporarily but causes no lasting harm.
Yes. Modules self-discharge at slightly different rates, and a car parked for months lets them drift out of balance. A second car or a seasonal Prius often ages its pack faster than a higher-mileage daily driver.
Most suppliers offer two choices. We offer three, and the middle one is the option most Gen 2 owners end up wanting.
It comes down to how long you plan to keep the car.
All three carry unlimited mileage warranties. None of them penalise you for driving the car.
Because more amp-hours means the pack does the same work at lower stress. A cell with more capacity spends less of its life at the extremes of charge and discharge, and it is life at the extremes that ages a NiMH module. On a car you intend to keep, it is the best value per dollar in the range.
Our packs are built to outlast their warranty. In practice we typically see at least double the warranty period, and frequently a good deal more.
That is what we observe across the packs we build, not a guarantee batteries are wear items and conditions vary. The warranty is the floor we stand behind, not our estimate of the pack’s life.
You can, and it is a false economy. Here is why.
Every one of the 28 modules in your Gen 2 Prius pack has lived the same life — the same heat, the same cycles, the same twenty years. When one fails, the others are rarely far behind. Replace the single worst module and the pack works again, briefly. A couple of months later the next-weakest one fails, and you are back where you started.
That becomes an expensive game of whack-a-mole. Each round costs another diagnosis, another teardown, more labor and more downtime, and none of it addresses the root problem: the pack as a whole has reached the end of its service life.
This is why we test and replace at the module level across the entire pack. It is also why we can offer 12 to 48 months of warranty — you cannot warranty a pack you have only partially repaired.
