What is a Hybrid Battery?

Key Points Discussed:
  • Hybrid batteries use two main types: NiMH and lithium-ion.
  • NiMH is older, heavier, and known for long lifespan.
  • Lithium-ion is lighter, more efficient, and used in newer hybrids.

You’ve heard the term hybrid battery before, but did you know they’re actually two completely different types? So, most people think a hybrid battery is just a hybrid battery, but really it’s not. There are two main chemistries. First is N IMH, which stands for nickel metal hydrate. This is the original hybrid battery.

You’ll find in kind of like older models like a Prius, classic Lexus hybrids, or older RAV 4s. So, it’s going to be heavier, older tech. But here’s one thing, it is a tank. These batteries regularly go to 200,000 or even 300,000 miles with little to no issues. Second is a lithium ion battery. This is what you’ll find in newer hybrids and plugins.

So, it’s going to be lighter, more energy jets, and it’s also going to have probably better performance, but also it’s a little more sensitive if it’s not managed properly. Bottom line, both work, both last, different chemistry, same job. Store energy, release energy, and repeat.
